Cloud fails to offer silver lining for Disneyland holiday hopefuls

AMONG the thousands of Irish travellers affected by the volcanic ash cloud that has swept across northern Europe were the McCarthy family from Youghal, Co Cork.

Cloud fails to offer silver lining for Disneyland holiday hopefuls

David, Za and their children Ben, 10, Ishiah, 7, and Ewan, 2, arrived at Cork airport early yesterday morning in anticipation of leaving for a “dream holiday” to Disneyland Paris.

But by 1.30pm – and having witnessed growing crowds of restless would-be passengers and rows of empty check-in desks – they quickly realised the dream holiday they had spent two years planning and saving for lay in tatters.

“We’ve been talking about this holiday for two years and three or four months ago we finally managed to find time to book these couple of weeks.

“The last week and a half the kids have been really excited about this, really looking forward to it, so it’s very disappointing for them,” said David.

“We’ve been on some bad flights over the years and we’d always say it’s better to be safe than sorry with something like this, but we just can’t believe it would happen on the one day we would travel,” Za added.

Among the other passengers affected at Cork airport was former All Blacks player and current Munster winger Doug Howlett, who was there to see off relatives on a trip to London.

Unlucky Michael Holloway, who was due to begin the first leg of a round the world flight to Argentina, said it was the second time in two years his plans had been ruined by “once in a lifetime events”, after a similar natural disaster in Chile in May 2008.
