A final farewell for ‘a good friend’

CLASSMATES of a young football star will line out today in a guard of honour for a final journey for “a good friend”.

A final farewell for ‘a good friend’

Tributes were paid to 14-year-old Jonathan O’Regan, from Glandore Road in Leap, as a tight-knit community rallied in support of his heartbroken family.

Described yesterday as jolly, fun-loving and a friend to many, Jonathan will be laid to rest at Kilfacthnabeg Cemetery in Glandore this afternoon.

The teen passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning during a sleepover at a friend’s house in Skibbereen.

“He was a character, a good kid and very talented on the field,” William Williamson of Kilmacabea GAA club said.

GAA teammates and club members will line out in the club’s green and yellow colours as the youngster’s coffin is shouldered from his home by family members to St Mary’s Church in Leap.

“He is a great loss to the club and his family,” Mr Williamson said.

As family members finalised funeral arrangements for Jonathan yesterday, classmates at Mount St Michael’s in Rosscarbery were preparing final tributes for their friend.

“Our school community is in the deepest of sorrows. He had many friends and was a friend to many. He was fun loving and jolly and well known,” principal Bart Kerrisk said.

He collapsed at a friend’s house early on Wednesday and was later pronounced dead at Bantry General Hospital. Although Jonathan suffered from asthma, gardaí are continuing their investigation into the cause of his death.
