Still huge gaps in grass and silage supplies

A recent study indicates a good crop of first cut pit silage is 20% cheaper than bales. In terms of digestible dry matter, it costs only about half that of stemmy light crops of pit silage.

The late May and early June weather brought a welcome improvement in feed situations on farms, but there are still huge gaps in grass and silage supplies on many farms.

As expected, the worst effected farms are in wetland areas, or were heavily stocked and were farming on the edge even in good years.
