Levitating train is coming down the tracks

Elon Musk’s futuristic rail pipe dream has taken a step closer to be reality, with one of the companies working on a prototype to bring the project to fruition securing $26m (€23.9m) in funding.

Levitating train is coming down the tracks

The Series B investment was announced by Hyperloop Technologies as the Web Summit drew to a close. The company said it was confident it would have $80m Series B funding in place by the end of the year.

Hyperloop Technologies CEO Rob Lloyd predicted the super high-speed levitating train, which is envisaged could travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco in just 30 minutes, would have huge economic benefits.

Separately, Irish start-up Bizimply scooped a double victory yesterday, winning the ESB Spark of Genius and Audi Pitch beta awards.

The Dublin-based firm, founded by Gerard Forde, Mikey Cannon, and Norman Hewson in 2012, takes home €25,000 as a result of the initial victory which saw them hold off competition from fellow finalists Ayda and Soapbox Labs, as well as over 170 other entrants.

“We were three people at Christmas and there’s 13 of us today,” said Mr Forde. “Hopefully in the next four or five months we’ll double that again. And just for the whole team, there’s so many young ambitious team members who wanted to join a start-up and now it’s a start-up that’s winning awards. So it’s hugely important to us.”

The innovative start-up is expanding into the US and is in the process of opening a Boston office. The aim is for Bizimply to grow into one of the world’s largest HR firms.

“Someday we hope to have hundreds and hundreds of employees,” said Mr Forde. “That’s our plan. We just try to grow, grow, grow.”

It was a good day for Irish delivery management service Scurri, which signed a multi-million euro deal with Fastway Couriers Ireland and Parcel Connect.
