A quarter of Apple’s 16,000-strong European workforce is now based in its headquarters on the northside of Cork City.

New figures on Apple’s job creation in Europe, released yesterday, show that its workforce in Cork has grown to almost 4,000 staff and accounts for about 10% of its corporate employees worldwide.

A number of business functions are carried out at the tech giants’s European headquarters including manufacturing and distribution.

“Apple is proud to have been doing business in Cork, Ireland since 1980.

“We have grown our workforce to roughly 4,000 employees, who serve our customers through distribution, manufacturing, tech support, and other critical functions.

“These employees play an important part in Apple’s success and continued growth in Ireland,” the company’s report reads.

An additional 2,500 jobs are supported locally by Apple’s presence in the city too, according to the company.

The report shows thatits Irish workforce is its second biggest in Europe after its operations in the UK where 5,000 workers are employed — many of whom work in the country’s 37 Apple retail stores.

The company’s Irish base was recently added to with a new three-story office building that includes IT and security rooms,

as well as meeting rooms and open-plan office space.

The new development, known as building 4, also boasts a number of environmentally friendly features including solar panels; an “active facade” that helps to naturally control internal temperature; and rainwater harvesting roof installations.

Of the 629,000 jobs created or supported by Apple in Europe, almost 500,000 are directly attributable to the company’s App Store which hosts more than 1.2m apps and from which 75bn downloads have been made.

Of the €15bn earned by developers through sales on the App Store, more than €4.8bn has been paid to European developers, according to Apple.

The ‘app economy’ is growing by 12% per year in the EU and is estimated to be worth $16.5bn in revenues this year.
