Invasive plant eradicated on 16km of river
Thursday, January 05, 2012
THE biggest Himalayan balsam eradication campaign to be undertaken in Ireland continues in north Munster.
Commonly found on riverbanks, wet areas and in gardens, the plant grows rapidly and spreads quickly, smothering other vegetation as it grows.
Over 16km of river bank has been treated to date in the IRD Duhallow LIFE organisation’s eradication campaign.
Rural Social Scheme workers are carrying out much of the work of removal by hand pulling, without chemicals or sprays.
