Rovers beaten on penalties

Blackburn were beaten on penalties by US Major League side DC United in their friendly in Washington in the early hours of today.

Andy Cole had put the Premiership club on course for victory with the opening goal in the 30th minute but United hit back to claim a 1-1 draw through Brian Carroll.

Carroll’s effort five minutes from time sent the game to a penalty shootout and it was the Americans who emerged victorious on sudden death after the seventh round of spot-kicks.

Nils-Eric Johansson’s miss proved decisive after Dema Kovalenko had netted his penalty.

New Rovers signings Lorenzo Amorouso and Brett Emerton both featured, playing the full 90 minutes at RFK Stadium.
