Official: Vatican bank investigation centred on 'mistake'

A Vatican bank official, who is under investigation over allegations of money laundering, has said the inquiry centres on a mistake.

Ettore Gotti Tedeschi claims an error of procedure at the bank is being exploited to attack the Vatican.

He has told a newspaper the operation involved a transfer between Vatican bank accounts and he feels humiliated by the investigation.

The Vatican has expressed its utmost faith in Mr Tedeschi and a second official who is also under investigation.
