Greek party leader vows to write off half of national debt

The head of Greece's left-wing Syriza party has promised to end the "national humiliation" of austerity.

Opinion polls ahead of Sunday's vote give Syriza the lead - with party leader Alexis Tsipras pledging to write-off half of the country's massive debt.

"On Monday, national humiliation will be over," he told supporters.

"We will finish with orders from abroad. We are asking for a first chance for Syriza. It might be the last chance for Greece."

If the party does win the election next Monday, it could lead to a confrontation with the Troika - with many analysts predicting Greece could leave the Euro.

George Hatzidakis, a reporter in Athens, says Syriza has had internal discussions about leaving the currency.

"There's a big battle going on within the Syriza party itself," he said.

"their current stance is, yes, they are pledging to stay within the Euro and do everything within the Eur.

"A big chunk of its internal dynamics is saying: 'If we have to, we will leave, It is not our goal, but if we have to, we will leave'.

"It has not been settled as yet."
