E-cigarettes to be classified as 'medicines'

In the UK, Electronic cigarettes will be classed as "medicines" under new proposals to tighten up the regulation of products containing nicotine.

Manufacturers are going to face tough new tests before they can sell their e-cigarettes as "licensed products".

Jeremy Mean is from the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and hopes the move will improve safety.

"There are licensed products, gums, patches, that help people come off smoking," he said.

"What we're saying today is we want all products available including electronic cigarettes to come up to those standards."
