New Zealand’s Sonny Bill Williams had his generosity rewarded when he was presented with a new World Cup winner’s medal at the World Rugby awards last night.

He intervened when young fan Charlie Lines was tackled by stewards as he tried to run on to the pitch and celebrate with the New Zealand players.

“A young fella came sprinting on and he got smoked by the security guard,” Williams said. “It was pretty sad, he’s just a young fella obviously caught up in the moment.

“Why not try and make a young fella’s night? Hopefully he’ll remember it for a while.”

Williams was asked about the gesture again last night and modestly suggested ‘most people’ would have done the same.

“It was a gesture that most people would do,” he said. “The young fella got hurt, got tackled. I looked at it if that was my little brother or nephew, I wouldn’t want that to happen to him.

“I just wanted to put a smile on his face.”
