VIDEO: Irish WWE star tells Dublin crowd to pay their water charges; takes dig at Conor McGregor
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) rolled into Dublin’s 3Arena last night and Irish wrestler Sheamus gave an exhibition of how to get the crowd to hate you.
Sheamus, whose real name is Stephen Farrelly, used to work as a bouncer in Dublin and even acted as a bodyguard for Bono on occasion.
The former two-time WWE Champion has just returned to TV after a long lay-off as a heel (wrestler speak for a ‘bad guy’), but was always going to be cheered in his home town.
Sheamus decided to come out at the end of a match between Adrian Neville and WWE’s newest Irish star Finn Bálor.
Bálor, a Bray native, has recently joined the company and is a star on the development show NXT - he also featured in an excellent RTÉ documentary charting his stardom in Japan and his journey to WWE.
In a video captured by fans last night Sheamus appeared to be congratulating Bálor and Neville on a great match when he turned on them in classic wrestling fashion.
After hitting his finisher the Brogue Kick on Bálor, Sheamus then took a pop at UFC fighter Conor McGregor’s height, before telling Bálor, “There’s only room for one Irishman in the WWE.”
Later in the night Sheamus had a match of his own and decided to grab the microphone mid-match to tell the crowd to pay their water charges - which of course resulted in a chorus of boos.
Although, it seems Irish fans were impressed by Sheamus’ commitment to his character at least.
Seems like not only are the Irish apparently taking over the UFC, but the WWE as well as the country now has three wrestlers working with the world's top promotion. Dublin woman Rebecca Quin, who goes by the ring name Becky Lynch, also appears on NXT with Bálor - with hopes the pair will join Sheamus on the main roster soon.
The WWE also made it a brilliant night for Ireland’s Special Olympians by inviting them to the show and arranging a meeting with long time star The Big Show.
