Twin gold medals for Ireland from Taylor and O'Reilly

It’s double glory for Ireland at the European Games in Baku with two boxing gold medals clinched by Katie Taylor and Michael O’Reilly.

Taylor added European Games glory to her numerous Olympic, world and European Championship crowns by winning a resounding unanimous points decision over Estelle Mossely of France at the Crystal Hall.

Only one judge awarded a solitary round to the Frenchwoman – the first - in a 40-36 40-36 39-37 triumph for the Bray boxer.

It’s her 18th major championship medal.

And in an impressive follow-up, Portlaoise middleweight O’Reilly outboxed and more crucially outpointed home Azeri fighter Xaybula Musalov on unanimous points.

In a real ebb-and-flow encounter, O’Reilly was awarded the first round by all three scoring judges, and Musalov the second, with O’Reilly responding excellently in the final round to win gold for Ireland.

Each judge scored it 29-28 in his favour.

Chloe and Sam Magee were beaten in their mixed doubles semi-final in the badminton, clinching a bronze medal after falling in a tight encounter to Gaetan Mittelheisser and Audrey Fontaine.

The French pair wrapped up the opening game 21-12 in just 13 minutes, after an early Irish lead of two, but the Magees made a better fight of the second set by pushing the game into extra points, eventually losing it 23-21.

Emma Reid bowed out of the women’s 50m butterfly at the semi-final stage, having originally clocked 28.16 to finish equal fifth in her heat, going through in 14th.

The national squad finished eighth in their men’s 4x100m medley relay semi-final, and there was no progress for James Brown, Ben Doyle, Andrew Moore, Niamh Kilgallen or Danielle Hill.

Ireland will finish Baku 2015 with six medals – two gold, one silver and three bronze.
