Nine-point win for Derry
Derry 1-16 Wexford 0-10
Wexford’s good Championship record against Ulster teams came to a crashing halt in Owenbeg, after Derry came away with a nine-point win in this SFC Round 2B Qualifier.
David Power’s side were hopeful that after an impressive victory over Down a fortnight ago, they would continue to keep their good run going, and book a place in Monday morning’s Round 3 Qualifier draw.
However, Derry firmly had other ideas, and after a tight opening, which saw Derry lead by 0-6 to 0-4, the Oak Leafers kicked on, on the way to a comfortable victory.
Eoin Bradley, Enda Lynn and Cailean O'Boyle fired early points for the hosts, with Mark Lynch also impressive, firing three points from frees.
The Slaneysiders kept in touch through scores from Ciarán Lyng, Ben Brosnan and Adrian Flynn, before Derry bagged a fortuitous goal before the interval.
Caolan O’Boyle’s shot ricocheted off the crossbar before coming off Wexford's Brian Malone to finish in the back of the net.
Further points from Benny Herron and Danny Heavron extended the hosts lead to a seven-point margin at the interval on a 1-8 to 0-4 score-line.
Wind assisted on the restart, there was plenty of hope in the Wexford camp that things would move in their favour in the second half.
But despite this advantage the visitors struggled to make any great impact, as Derry continued to hold that extra edge.
To their credit, Wexford never gave up with the reliable attacking force of Ben Brosnan and Ciaran Lyng continuing to eat into the Derry advantage.
Brosnan finished with three points, while Lyng delivered five over the course of the 70 minutes, but Derry also took some impressive scores.
Mark Lynch continued to impress, while Herron and O’Boyle also were in stunning form.
Liam McGoldrick and Conor McAtamney also claimed scores during the closing 35 minutes, as Derry safely secured a place in the next round.
