Coughlan: Physical Education should be on Leaving Cert

A Fine Gael Senator and former Irish Athlete has said PE should be a Leaving Cert subject.

Eamonn Coughlan said it is not about students getting points for their sporting abilities, it is about instilling a scientific understanding of sport in school children.

He also said they should have to undertake PE in the same way they would any other science subject, if they are to pursue sports-based courses at third level.

Coughlan said: "This is about kids doing homework, an essay on cardio-vascular, on the heart and lungs, it's almost like biology.

"If a child or a student wants to go to college to study PE or sports management, physical education does not count, when physical education should be one of the most important subjects."
