UCC offers 'dry' apartment for students who want 'quieter surroundings'

University College Cork is to offer students alcohol-free accommodation for the first time.

Thousands of freshers will begin their studies in the coming weeks and while many associate the college experience with partying, UCC wants to facilitate those with no interest in boozing.

Student Union President, Paddy Huaghney, said: "There are students from over 80 countries worldwide studying in UCC with different cultural and religious backgrounds, and alcohol may not appeal to these students.

"It will also appeal to students in their final year and postrgaduate level who would prefer the quieter surroundings of an alcohol-free area."

The Irish Examiner reports that students can apply at accommodation@ucc.ie, or by phoning 021 4941200 or 021 4818452.
