Two best friends getting married to avoid tax have tied the knot

The two men who caused controversy over their decision to get married to avoid inheritance tax were wed today.

Matt Murphy (85) married his best friend Michael O’Sullivan in Dublin this afternoon.

The heterosexual men got married at the Registrar’s Office in Dublin and posed for photographs outside after the ceremony.

Matt would like to leave his house to Michael when he dies but to overcome the financial burden that inheritance leaves, the pair decided to wed.

Michael is separated and has two kids with his current partner, Eileen.

Matt never married.

The men sparked controversy after speaking to Joe Duffy on Liveline about their decision.

When asked by Joe why he was marrying his best friend, Matt replied, "Because he’ll be part of my life when I die and whatever I have in my home he can have without any problems".
