Two arrested in west Dublin as Tánaiste blocked by protesters

Public anger against water charges reached a new high in west Dublin this afternoon, as the Tanaiste was blocked into a local community centre in Jobstown for several hours.

Angry anti-water charge protesters stopped Joan Burton's car from leaving a public engagement on the Clomore Road.

The demonstration began as a peaceful protest but escalated into heated scenes, with up to 1,000 people chanting and yelling and the Garda Public Order Unit deployed to escort the Tánaiste to safety.

The Labour leader left the scene shortly after 4pm after being transferred to a garda vehicle.

Gardaí said two teenage boys were arrested for "minor" breaches of the Public Order Act.
