Tánaiste asked if Shatter was stopped by gardaí before becoming Minister

An Independent TD has asked the Tánaiste to confirm whether Alan Shatter was stopped and cautioned by gardaí before being appointed Justice Minister.

Mattie McGrath said the issue is relevant given the penalty points quashing issue.

He highlighted the Minister revealing about Deputy Mick Wallace.

In the Dáil, he asked the Tánaiste to confirm or deny if the incident had happened.

"Whether he was asked to produce a specimen of breath under the mandatory breath testing provision contained in the Road Traffic Act 2010," said Mr McGrath

"And whether his behaviour and reaction to this request was appropriate and indeed cordial

"Or whether he attempted to use the privilege of travelling to and from the Dáil as a means of avoiding giving the breath test or being stopped at a garda check point

"And as to whether in fact he did give a specimen of breath on that occasion

"I have no idea what you are talking about," responded the Tánaiste.
