Study shows continuing decrease in alcohol consumption

New figures show that alcohol volumes in Ireland have dropped by 4.4% in the past 12 months.

The study highlights a continuing a trend of declining alcohol consumption levels since 2001.

Overall, the average consumption of alcohol in Ireland has reduced by 20% in the past 12 years.

Kathryn D’Arcy, Director of Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland says the idea that all Irish people drink to excess is simply not the case.

Ms D'Arcy said: "Certainly we are seeing from Revenue Commissioners that alcohol levels have declined by 4.4% in the last 12 months and that continues the falling trend that we have seen since 2001 of just about 20%, which is quite significant.

"I suppose it puts to bed the lie that the country is awash with alcohol, people are really starting to take into account what consuming alcohol responsibly does mean."
