Study shows 60% of older people mix alcohol and medication

A new study shows over half of older people who are prescribed medicines which have the potential to interact with alcohol, still consume drink while they're taking the medication.

The research by the Royal College of Surgeons School of Pharmacy shows that 72% of over-60s are prescribed such medications, and 60% reported consuming alcohol while taking these drugs.

Mixing alcohol with these medications can cause increased blood pressure, gastrointestinal bleeding, sedation and interference with the overall effectiveness of their prescriptions.
