Figures released by the Irish Cancer Society show that prostate cancer survival rates in Ireland increased by 10% over five years from 2001 to 2006.
In 2001, 77% of men in Ireland diagnosed with prostate cancer survived for five years or more and figures for 2006 show this increased to 87%.
It comes ahead of the Irish Cancer Society's free 'Supporting Men with Prostate Cancer' conference which is being held later in Dublin.
However, the numbers being diagnosed continue to increase. Men in Ireland now have a one in nine chance of developing prostate cancer before the age of 75.
The latest data available shows that 2,579 men developed prostate cancer in 2008.
