Pro-Life group unhappy with Lynch comments

The Pro-Life Campaign Group is criticising remarks made by Labour Minister Kathleen Lynch in relation to abortion.

Minister Lynch has said she believes an expert group set up to examine the issue would recommend legislation for abortion in certain circumstances.

Last night, Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore vowed that the issue of abortion will not cause a rift in the coalition.

The government has committed to dealing with a ruling of the European Court of Human Rights in relation to the so called X-Case - which may require legislation.

A number of Fine Gael TDs have said they will vote against any legislation which introduces abortion.

Pro-Life Campaign Spokesperson Dr Berrie Kiely says: "What we want to see is a situation where every effort is made to save the life of both the mother and the baby.

"That was effectively the promise Fine Gael gave prior to the election that they wanted the situation to continue whereby the mother's life is given priority but everything effort is made to save the baby as well.

"There is a duty of care to both mother and child."
