Police have been attacked by crowds of around 100 people after fresh disturbances erupted in the North.

Petrol bombs, bricks, fireworks and other missiles were thrown at officers during the trouble in Portadown, Co Armagh, last night.

Police fired baton rounds at rioters after they gathered at Corcrain Road close to a sectarian flashpoint.

It is not yet known whether there have been any injuries.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Sinn Féin Assembly member John O’Dowd claimed Catholic families in the area were packing their bags as loyalists attacked again.

“Unionist political leaders need to act,” he said.
