A third of all drowning victims will have consumed alcohol prior to their death.

Irish Water Safety (IWS) is issuing the warning ahead of this August Bank Holiday weekend.

John CEO of IWS has this appeal:

"123 people drowned last year," he said.

"94 were male and 29 were female, so the male is at the greatest risk mainly because they tend to overestimate their ability in water and underestimate the risk."
