New bail laws propose more powers for Gardaí

The Government has published new bail laws that will require judges to give reasons for releasing suspects.

In the first changes to bail laws in 18 years, the Coalition says it is giving Gardaí the power to arrest people suspected of being in breach of bail without having to get a warrant.

It will also restrict bail for people between being convicted of a crime and being sentenced.

The new laws once passed will also allow for electronic tagging of suspects on bail.
