The body of a 21-year-old Kurdish man has been recovered from the River Shannon in Carrick-on-Shannon.

The body of a 21-year-old Kurdish man has been recovered from the River Shannon in Carrick-on-Shannon.

It is understood that he got into difficulty while swimming with friends at around 5pm yesterday evening.

Members of the Gardaí and sub aqua teams began a search for the young man this morning. His body was recovered at around lunchtime today.

It has now been taken to Sligo General Hospital, where a post mortem will be carried out.

Gardaí in Carrick on Shannon have described his death as a tragic accident.
