The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the family of an Irish man assaulted in Bulgaria.

The man is in a serious condition in hospital there after a fight in a nightclub.

It is believed that he sustained a fractured skull in the incident.

A spokesperson for the club in question said that an incident happened between a tourist and another man.

He was rushed to hospital by nightclub staff following the altercation.
