Household charge registrations almost 915k

Some 914,932 people have so far registered to pay the new household charge, it has been revealed.

The deadline to pay the €100 tax was March 31, and therefore anyone who registers now, will also have to pay a fine.

At least 1.7 million people are estimated to be liable to pay the charge.

The latest figures come after Government think-tank the ESRI this week described the tax as unfair because it hits people on lower incomes the hardest.
