Heathrow airport flights delayed, snow diverts flights to Shannon

Aer Lingus and Ryanair have cancelled several flights to and from the UK this morning, due to heavy snow.

More than 16 centimetres of snow fell overnight in England, Scotland and Wales.

Passengers in Ireland planning to fly to Britain today, or get a connecting flight there, are being advised to check airline websites.

Sixteen Aer Lingus flights between Dublin, Cork, Shannon, Belfast, London Heathrow and Gatwick airport have been cancelled this morning following overnight snow falls across the UK.

Ryanair cancelled two flights between Dublin and Birmingham, but said passengers booked to travel on cancelled flights could transfer to the next available Ryanair service free of charge or apply for a refund.

Heathrow airport has grounded more than 350 flights this morning.

However the airport is now described as "running, with delays" and both runways are open.

Meanwhile, a number of British Airways flights have been forced to divert to Shannon Airport this morning after they were unable to land at Heathrow because of snow.

Six flights have already diverted since 8am while others are expected in the coming hours.
