The Department of Health is to restrict the use of restraint in nursing homes around the country.

The Department of Health is to restrict the use of restraint in nursing homes around the country, it was announced today.

A policy document published today says the aim is to eliminate restraint completely, but where this is not feasible, the aim is to restrict it to emergency situations where it is absolutely necessary.

Minister of State for older people Kathleen Lynch says the publication of the strategy marks another significant step in putting the person at the centre of care.

According to the new policy, in cases where restraint is deemed necessary, it should only be applied in accordance with the law and best professional practice.
