It has emerged gardaí will not be issuing penalty points on fixed charged notices to drivers during next Tuesday's day of action.

In a statement the Garda Representative Association said it had advised its members they were not obliged to carry out a number of usual functions during the public sector strike.

It includes issuing notices to motorists for speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt , driving while holding a mobile phone, or dangerous overtaking.

A spokesman for the GRA said the action would be within the law because the issuing of fixed penalty notices is discretionary.
