Family devastated as Corkman found dead in rolled-over vehicle in Canada

Update 8pm: The family of a Cork man killed in a car crash in Canada say they are devastated.

Cathal Murphy from Bandon is one of two men who died in the incident in Melita, Manitoba on Saturday.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to both families.

This evening the Murphy family has issued a statement in which they have asked for privacy as they come to terms with their loss.

"We, the family of Cathal Murphy, are devastated at the death of our much loved son and brother in a road traffic accident in Canada on Saturday 10 October. We are very thankful for all the support shown to us at this difficult time.

"We would ask, however, that the media would now respect our privacy as we try to come to terms with our loss. We will not be making any further public comment.

"Thank you."

Update 5.40pm: One of the men killed in an accident in Canada over the weekend has been named.

Cathal Murphy, from Bandon Co Cork was found dead near Melita in Manitoba.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of reports that two Irishmen have died in a crash in Canada.

Media outlets in Canada say the pair were in a vehicle which was found rolled over at 10.30am on Saturday morning, near Melita in Manitoba.

Police in Canada say the men, aged 33 and 42, were pronounced dead at the scene.

There are unconfirmed reports that the two men are from Co. Cork.

Officials at the Department say they have not been asked for consular assistance, but they stand ready to provide help if it is requested.
