Education and Training Boards replace VECs to save €2m a year

Sixteen new Education and Training Boards will be established today to replace the 33 VEC's across the country.

The new ETB's will have 21 members, including 12 local authority representatives, two staff personnel and two parents along with five members from bodies representing community and business interests.

The reform will reduce the number of Chief Executive Officers in line with the number of bodies and result in savings of €2m annually

The new configuration also paves the way for the establishment of SOLAS, with the dissolution of FÁS and see the transfer of training functions to the newly formed Education and Training Boards.

It is expected that SOLAS will be formally established before the end of this year.
