Cyrus flops in 'The Last Song'
Director: Julie Anne Robinson
Cast: Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear
Cert: PG
If Cyrus could act this film might have limped across the finishing line, but she can’t and it didn’t.
And if you’re going to adapt a novel for the screen shouldn’t you retain at least some of the original?
You should and they didn’t. The Nicholas Sparks book was emotional and more in-depth while the film ditches all of the good stuff and gallops off in another direction.
Cyrus tries to move away from her songbird status but turns in an alarmingly inconsistent performance that is mostly downright bad and brings us a central character who is a rotten little teenage brat to begin with and remains so until the film grinds to a halt.
Cyrus plays 17-year-old Ronnie, a troubled girl who is sent by divorced mother to live with musician father for some parent/child bonding in a Deep South town.
The idea of the film, presumably, is to show us the way we can experience redemption and ‘love’ but the attempt lacks conviction since Cyrus hasn’t the skill to bring emotion to the screen.
