Mount Sion 2-22 Tallow 1-07
An early flurry put Mount Sion in control of a rather lifeless Waterford SHC quarter-final as they easily beat Tallow at a blustery Fraher Field yesterday, All-Ireland minor medallist Austin Gleeson emerging top scorer with nine points.
Despite playing against a stiff breeze, Sion led 1-6 to 0-0 within 13 minutes. An incisive pass from Martin F. O’Neill sent Sean Ryan clear after four minutes and he finished clinically.
Eoin McGrath swept up loose possession around the middle and, up front, they drilled low ball that Austin Gleeson and Stephen Roche benefited from.
Tallow showed signs of life when Thomas Ryan snatched the sliotar near the sideline and after a fine burst of speed picked out William Henley in the centre to drill home. They brought the deficit down to four but Sion got a grip of the game again to hold a commanding interval advantage (1-10 to 1-3).
The second half had an air of inevitability as Stephen Roche and Austin Gleeson dominated the scoring for Sion. Martin ‘F’ O’Neill nabbed their second goal on 49 minutes when he followed up after Robert Bresnan’s shot was blocked.
Gleeson nailed the score of the match when he sent a scorcher between the posts from his own 45 metre line.
