Invention crown up for grabs

Strains of probiotic organisms, semiconductors, and software developers will all battle it out to be crowned UCC’s Invention of the Year.

This year’s innovations range from new probiotic strains which significantly reduce stress, anxiety and pain, to software enabling accelerated data services for satellite systems at lower costs and increased speed and quality.

From semiconductor substrate formation to nano-pattern technology, the innovative research projects reflected the wide variety of research being conducted across the university.

Several therapeutic innovations including identification of molecules for treating multi-drug resistant cystic fibrosis infections and a ground-breaking gastroenteral feeding tube kit are also in contention.

Vice-president for research and innovation Professor Anita Maguire said the quality of the inventions was testament to the quality of the research being carried out on the campus.

The winner of the UCC Invention of the Year will be announced on Mar 27 at the research commercialisation awards, sponsored by Ronan Daly Jermyn and the Office of Technology Transfer at UCC.
