Tyrur Willyjoe belies odds in tremendous fashion

THE Tyrur McGuigan @ Stud Open 575 has provided some wonderful racing to kick of the New Year at Shelbourne Park over the past three weeks and next week’s final looks hugely intriguing following Saturday’s semi finals.

The star of proceeding on Saturday was sponsor PJ Fahy’s Tyrur Willyjoe as he posted a wonderful 31.28 when accounting for a top class field in the opening heat. Tyrur Willyjoe was only the 9-2 fourth favourite as Broadstrand Lad and Ohio Rumble topped the market ahead of Coolavanny Pride, but he belied his odds in tremendous fashion.

Lewcas Thunder and Ohio Rumble were fastest away in the middle but the Conor Fahy trained Tyrur Willyjoe accelerated on the run up to hit the front and lead into the opening turn.

At that point there was crowding between Lewcas Thunder and Ohio Rumble and this allowed Broadstrand Lad to shoot through the resulting gap. Tyrur Willyjoe remained clear however and while Broadstrand Lad did close to the third turn Tyrur Willyjoe called on extra reserves of stamina on the run in to extend his advantage once again. At the winning line Tyrur Willyjoe had two lengths to spare over Broadstrand Lad in 31.28, which in the cold and windy conditions was a very quick time. It was five and a half lengths back to Ohio Rumble in third.

The second heat saw Irene McConnell’s Martinstown Snow justify his position at the head of the betting as he showed the way home in 31.35. Sawdust Terry was a surprise leader in the opening yards from Croom Star but Martinstown improved into the bend and went between the pair to show in front into the far side.

Tyrur Domingo was now fourth ahead of the slow starting Tibetan Skies. Martinstown Snow displayed his trademark burst of acceleration down the back straight to open up a clear lead.

Croom Star did close on the gap on the run in, but Martinstown Snow had done enough and he stayed on well to secure a three parts of a length success in 31.35, while Tyrur Domingo ran a big race to grab third, just a length adrift.

Draw for next Saturday’s final is: 1 Tyrur Domingo; 2 Ohio Rumble; 3 Croom Star; 4 Broadstrand Lad; 5 Martinstown Snow (m); 6 Tyrur Willyjoe (w).

Earlier in the evening the opening round of the Joe Dunne Memorial Puppy 525 saw some very promising youngsters flex their muscles, although the undoubted star was the Fraser Black trained Droopys Jet.

He lived up to his advance billing with a fastest of the round 28.60. The runner up, Subway Gerry, also displayed big promise, but it was Droopys Jet that took the headlines as he led from the start.

He came away racing from trap one to lead before the turn and soon put daylight between himself and his rivals. Subway Gerry improved into second spot entering the back and he closed on the leader to the third turn, but Droopys Jet eased clear again on the run in to secure a length and a half victory.

Next best was the Seamus Graham trained Swift Impulse as the daughter of Kinloch Brae was fast into stride and held the determined challenge of Swords Jacko to the third bend before pulling away on the run-in for a 3 length margin in 28.83.

A big night for trainer Conor Fahy included a heat win for Tyrur Sheehy in Heat 3. He improved rapidly off the second bend to overtake the favourite Swift Marathon on the third bend and then ran on to win by a length and a half from the rallying Piercestown In in 28.93

The final heat was a pretty messy affair as favourite Noirs Buachaill was baulked when a narrow leader on the first bend. Murt Leahy’s Ballybough Hawke ran strongly to lead on the fourth bend and won by half a length and the same from Mutual Consent and Noirs Buachaill.

The first leg of a treble for Conor and PJ Fahy arrived in the third race, an A1 550 final, where Tyrur Lanney hit the front on the third bend to win by a length and a half from Pennylane Jedar in 30.05.

Draw for the semi-finals of the Joe Dunne Memorial:

Heat 1: 1 Mutual Consent; 2 Swift Jacko; 3 Swift Marathon; 4 Beany Tunes (m); 5 Tyrur Sheehy (w); 6 Ballybough Hawke (w).

Heat 2: 1 Droopys Jet; 2 Tyrur Loughery; 3 Piercestown In; 4 Swift Impulse; 5 Noirs Buachaill (m); 6 Subway Gerry (w).
