A lesson in some harsh political reality

WELL done to all who cast their vote last week and are heady with excitement at having backed a winner — in truth, you could hardly have done otherwise.

Your first lesson in political reality is coming up: that is to learn there are no winners in politics apart from politicians.

The next lesson to accept the definition of a politician: an inadequate person pursuing a position of self-importance. Bereft of talent, as most are, it is the only route open to them. Like running off to join a circus, no previous experience needed. Being of generous heart and having given trust to a candidate or candidates for the first time, be prepared for disappointment. Your vote was a protest vote. You voted against that which you know by voting for that which you don’t know.

And dear innocent democrat, do be wary of trusting to dynastic succession, or “bogogeniture” — Irish political inheritance. You have seen in recent weeks the effects of this in the Middle East and Africa. Much too risky for semi-tribal Ireland. Also, dear children, by the time you come to realise the truth in politics is a moveable feast, a means to an end, it is too late. When you come to grips with all that, and more, and have tried to get your own back twice, you’ll be a cynical grown-up. For the moment, welcome aboard for your first spin on the magic roundabout.
