Objections of gardaí are easy to understand

I READ with amusement Brian McCaffrey’s letter (Irish Examiner, March 1). I don’t think Mr McCaffrey is getting the point of the objection raised by the GRA and AGSI.

He asks if it takes a fully-fledged garda to make arrests and patrol disorderly conduct... Yes it does, and not someone who has trained for 120 hours.

I think the events in Dublin last Saturday have certainly answered that. Mr McCaffrey also seems to dislike the fact that gardaí like to choose where they live, like any other citizen.

Or perhaps he would like policing on the cheap where the guard can be called upon at any hour of the day or night. Interestingly, the Minister has stated that the proposed reserve force would not be asked to patrol the areas where they themselves live.

So much for Mr McCaffrey’s idea of concerned people giving their time to their communities.
