Doherty pleads guilty to having heroin

JUNKIE rock star Pete Doherty was remanded in custody yesterday after pleading guilty to possessing heroin.

The Babyshambles frontman and former boyfriend of Kate Moss was arrested at 3.30pm on Thursday in Whitechapel Road in east London.

Plain clothes police officers stopped him because the 26-year-old looked dishevelled and suspicious and because he was a known drug user, Thames Magistrates’ Court, in east London, heard today.

They found a wrap of white powder in the pocket of his jeans, the court heard.

Doherty told the officers: “It was in my pocket from earlier, I didn’t even know it was there.

“Please, officers, don’t do this. I’ve got a gig tonight, cut me a break.”

Doherty appeared in the dock yesterday dressed scruffily in jeans and a leather jacket. A bail application on his behalf was refused.

District Judge Stephen Dawson told him: “I’m sorry if my order will affect your fans and people who go to your concerts.”

The singer was remanded in custody to appear again on February 8 at Ealing Magistrates’ Court in west London for sentence. He also faces other charges there of possessing drugs.

Doherty is due to appear again at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Monday to face a charge of driving while unfit through drugs.

He was due to be playing a concert in Glasgow last night with further gigs scheduled in Bristol today and London tomorrow.
