Jockey Club confirms Valleys failed dope test

THE Jockey Club yesterday confirmed that Three Valleys failed a post-race drugs test after winning the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket last month.

The Roger Charlton-trained youngster tested positive for clenbuterol, but he will not be stripped of his Group One success until after the result of the B sample is known. That will not be for several weeks.

“The B sample has not been done yet, so it’s just a preliminary positive. We won’t confirm it as a positive until after the B sample has been returned to us,” said Jockey Club spokesman Owen Byrne yesterday.

“It could be several weeks before we get the result as the samples go abroad.”

Charlton had been treating Three Valleys for mucus in the lungs.

“He was withdrawn from veterinary treatment nine days before the guidelines (veterinary and Jockey Club), which suggest that six and a half days should be a safe period for clenbuterol,” the Beckhampton trainer told the Racing Post.

Trainers concerned over the guidelines have the chance to air their views at pre-arranged meetings with Jockey Club officials shortly.

“There are due to be meetings with trainers over the next few weeks and the first is planned for tomorrow at Newmarket, at which Jockey Club veterinary director Peter Webbon will be present,” added Byrne.
