Lee could be pitted against Golden Gloves champion
Larry Morrison, one of the organisers along with Dan Lane from the Rylane Club who are co-promoters, said last night that Lee, who has sidestepped the National Senior Championships to box against the team from the New York Police Department, is raring to go.
Recently graduated from the Garda College in Templemore, Lee was a finalist last year and would have guaranteed defending champion Kenneth Egan stern opposition for the light heavyweight title.
“Obviously he would have liked to have another shot at the title but he is still young and will have more opportunities,” said Larry Morrison. “But this is a high profile show and he is anxious to put up a good performance.”
The National Senior Championship finals take place at the National Stadium the night after the Cork show.
This will not be Lee’s first visit to the Rochestown Park Hotel. Two years ago he made it through to the finals at the first every multi nations tournament to be held in Ireland.
On the other side of the draw Ireland, who as host nation were entitled to double up at the weights, had Ken Egan coming through and when the pair clashed in the final it proved to be one of the highlights of the week.
Lee continued to build on that performance and, a short time later, he went to the multi-nations tournament in Germany and came home with the gold medal.
On St. Patrick’s night he could be meeting a Golden Gloves champion and that would obviously be a huge assignment for the man whose father named him after the great Marvellous Marvin Hagler.
There will be a big Cork representation on the Irish team which will include some boxers who are not members of the Garda Siochana.
A limited number of tickets will be on sale at 30 and they can be obtained at the Rochestown Park Hotel, Barretts Bar in Millstreet and Rylane Post Office. John O’Donovan will deal with enquiries about tables and can be contacted at 021-4890800.
