TOURISM could be our new Celtic Tiger.
One of the best ways of selling Ireland abroad is actually from within our country. Treat tourists with hospitality, give them value for money and a first-class service, then repeat business will ensue.
Equally important, however, is a campaign to target new forms of tourism from outside the country. That is why it is essential we have utmost confidence in the accountability and feasibility of Fáilte Ireland’s €14 million spend on overseas promotion
I believe we have limitless tourism possibilities. The conferencing circuit is largely unexplored, despite having class hotels countrywide providing unequalled facilities. Sadly, some of these are now struggling for existence or closing down. Climate summits were held in Copenhagen, Bali and elsewhere. Why not lure one to Ireland? Business, farming, professional and sports organisations should become more involved with Fáilte Ireland in promoting international conferences here.
Outdoor activities like mountaineering, hillwalking, cycling, fishing and water sports also have huge potential.
Some imagination by hotel-owners in making holidays more enjoyable by providing sporting competitions, escorted tours, entertainment and cultural activities would help also to attract tourists.
