City speed limits - Making haste too slowly

Tuesday, February 02, 2010

CITY centre traffic chaos and airport delays are two of the great curses of travelling and anything that can make them more bearable is to be welcomed.

It is difficult, however, to see how a city centre speed limit of 30km/h – 19mph in old money – will do anything other than increase motorists’ blood pressure.

To put this trundling silliness in context Usain Bolt ran the 2009 World Championship 100m final in an average of 37.578 km/h – 23.35 mph.

Not since we were issued with iodine tablets for use in the event of a nuclear attack has officialdom made a proposal so preposterous.

It will utterly undermine the credibility of our bruised traffic laws. Do its proponents believe gardaí will police the limit in perpetuity? Of course they won’t so we’ll have an idiotic law that everyone ignores.

Don’t we have enough problems without condemning our cities to a perpetual crawl?
