Youth gangs a threat to city market
The market is now being hit by gangs of young tearaways who steal from visitors and stall-holders alike.
In recent weeks a number of people have been robbed and what should be a relaxing experience in the market has been turned into a nightmare. Even the stall-holders are now up in arms over the lack of security. Two stalls were robbed in recent times.
Surely it is not beyond the ability of Limerick City Council to arrange with the gardaí to have visible foot patrols in the market on Saturday mornings.
The venue is a traditional meeting place between the city and the country and it is a colourful way of spending a few hours on a Saturday morning.
However, the joy of visiting the market is now being ruined by the activities of these gangs of youths.
The market is a tourist attraction and, as such, it should be the concern of the city fathers to ensure that people who visit it are safe and well protected from anti-social behaviour.
Unless they act soon a traditional attraction could be lost to Limerick.
