Records fall at schools championship

DESPITE strong winds, Saturday’s Kit Kat Tailteann Irish Schools’ Interprovincial track and field championships in Tullamore produced a number of records.

Munster won the girls 4 x 300 metres relay in a time of 2:48.1, .5 of a second faster than Leinster’s 1994 record.

Team member Laura Crowe also won the 800 metres in which she equalled the record of 2:12.5 set by Aoife Byrne in 1996.

Another record was equalled in the boys 200 metres when Stephen Aitken (Dunmurry H.S.) recorded 22.0.

The boys 1500 metres provided the finish of the day, with D. McCarthy (St. Augustine’s, Waterford), getting up to pip C. O’Lionnard (DLS, Macroom) right on the line in an all-Munster finish.

The team honours of the day were shared by the Ulster boys and Munster girls, with Leinster filling the runner-up spot in both categories.
