Political animals show a striking resemblance

THE political expenses scandal got me thinking about Fianna Fáil, the Greens and Animal Farm by George Orwell. The last sentence of Orwell’s masterpiece reads: “As the animals look from Napoleon to Pilkington, from man to pig and from pig back to man, they find that they are unable to tell the difference.”

It seems that once in power, politicians are working in a vacuum, their principles forgotten and oh how quickly they change.

Shame on John Gormley, a politician I greatly admired prior to him taking a train and a ferry in an attempt to travel environmentally only to be met by a hired Mercedes travelling 300 miles to collect him from Holyhead costing both the environment and the taxpayers.

Are they now tainted by Fianna Fáil in such a manner that we can no longer tell the difference between the parties?
