Islamic militants shot by Indian police

FOUR suspected Islamic militants who police said belonged to a suicide squad were shot and killed yesterday in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

The three men and one woman opened fire when police tried to stop their car in the city of Ahmadabad, the commercial capital of Gujarat.

Ahmadabad police had received a tip that the four were planning a suicide mission in Gujarat, and were on the lookout for them.

Gujarat was the site of bloody Hindu-Muslim riots in early 2002 in which more than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed.
