Firms’ telecommunications needs ‘not being met’

THE telecommunications market is failing to meet growing business demands, the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland (CCI) warned yesterday.

But despite the failings of telecoms market and the tech slump, small-and-medium-sized firms are still embracing new technology, according a CCI survey.

“A total of 61% of companies surveyed said that they would use the internet more if an always on flat rate service was available,” said CCI Digital Business Council chairman Annrai O’Toole.

“The telecommunications market is not meeting the growing demands of business. Businesses in Ireland have to settle for ISDN as the best available service and therefore are not realising the potential of the internet, unlike their European and American counterparts.”

He added over 70% of businesses believe uncertainty about the legal and regulatory environment is a problem when it comes to adopting e-business.

“The Telecoms Regulator needs to adopt a tougher stance and the new minister must ensure that the regulator has the power to enforce,” Mr O’Toole said.

“There is a concern the Government has taken its eye off the ball on this issue and that nobody is driving this agenda forward. This is not a technology issue but a fundamental competitiveness issue for businesses and Ireland Inc.

“The Government needs to be more aggressive in stimulating competition.”
